IIRC, he tried fasting and denying his body of its basic needs for a while, as was popular in his time, and became very frail and skinny. But he decided this was just as bad as the life of decadence he had been living earlier, and thus became convinced of the need for a "middle path" between both extremes. |

@Superme Well, when you see the image of the jolly fat man, most people assume it's Buddha. And they're half right. It is A buddha, but it's not THE buddha. Buddha is just a title like Dr or Professor, that means something like "The enlightened one". However, when most people talk about "Buddha", they mean the founder of buddhism, Siddhartha Guatama. The fat jolly man is called "Budai", who some buddhists believe to be a future Buddha. |
