Okay, so this is the last OT's I will make concerning this album. But before I get started I would like to address two very important things.
1) Layne is dead 2) He is not coming back
Can we move on? Ok.
So the devil put dinosaurs here is the second reunion album of alice in chains and in my honest opinion, it's one of their best. What's great about this album is that it includes all the dark, murky alice in chains feel while also having a new sound to it. The vocals are given a different mood with William Duvall. An eerie, haunting sound.
1) Hollow - A really catchy, and a really heavy song which in a way sets you up for what this album is going to be. It has the slow parts, the dark and murky, and the catchy.
2) Pretty Done - A song that starts off with eerie bends that make you feel uneasy, and vocals that go well with the tone that then alternate into very hard rock like riffs that soothe.
3) Stone - Probably the best song of the album. The hard hitting heavy main riff gets stuck in your head for weeks and the solo shows a very matured Jerry Cantrell as a guitarist. You hear that distorted bass in the beginning and you're like "Here we go..."
4) Voices - A semi acoustic song that draws you in at the first line "who am I, is this me". The song starts off with ambient, mellow noise that softly creeps into an acoustic, yet very heavy riff that leads you into a relieving chorus.
5) (self titled) - Some call it love, hate, love part two. I can see why. It starts off with the same kind of ambient unsettling riff that mix well with the throaty bends in the background that set the mood. A song that lives up to its name. Very aggressive, yet pretty soft at times.
6) Lab Monkey - To me the weakest song of the album. Not really a bad song, but it Maas it's faults. The background riff doesn't go well with the main riff too good and the song seems to drag on UNTIL... It's saved by the amazing bridge that reminds me of the beginning of bleed the freak. Great lyrics, too.
7) Low ceiling - you can smell the hard rock from a mile off. By no means a bad thing. Not much to say about this song. Great verse, great chorus.
8) Breath on a window - This time you don't detect the hard rock in the guitar but in the vocals. Funny how the verse is better than the chorus. The chorus feels campy and the solo isn't the best.
9) Scalpel - This song doesn't kick off until the pre chorus, really. The reason being that on the verses, Cantrell voice sounds a bit shaky. We shouldn't be surprised. Who wouldn't be a bit worn out after 20 years? The song is very up beat while the lyrics are very dark and brooding. Great work.
10) hung on a hook - The only lead from William DuVall and its great. This guy can really sing. He carries the songs mood perfectly making it a very calm song about very serious problems. Creativity really shines on this song. It takes the perspective of a mirror who looks at a man during his mid life crisis.
11) Phantom Limb - The great thing about is song is that as it progresses, it get more darker and darker until it stops, and you hear that great riff and again. And so it all starts over.
12) Choke - Another semi acoustic, only this time, much sadder. This feels like all the songs put into one. Not much more to say about it other than that it just sounds great.
Although this album is great, I must address that it is COMPRESSED TO HELL and the quality is terrible. However, because of the compression, you can hear all the tracks and all the hard work that has been put into this album.
Darko29 giv;es this album a 9/10

| Actually, if you would have read, I consider it one of their best. Their third best. Dirt being no 1 jar of flies being no 2. |

| Grunge isn't a sound. And if you mean muddy guitars, THE SELF TITLED WAS FULL OF IT. |

"Grunge isn't a sound. "
Hardcore punk, DIY ethic, metal and blues influences, angry/tortured vocals, LOUD-soft dynamics. |

| It's a culture, not a sound. How similar is nirvana to pearl jam? |

Dude, black gives way to blue was the mourning album. Now they're back. I also think they're continuing the band in honor of layne.
