Pong. It revolutionized games, everywhere, to a great standard of what we call video games today. |

| @iwant Cod4 I agree was really good, but after that they just beat the Call of Duty series to death with the only real improvement to the series after that being zombies which only Treyarch has. Otherwise it was just the same gameplay with different maps and guns. |

>Half Life
JUST BECAUSE IT WAS CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED DOESN'T MEAN IT WAS REVOLUTIONARY! IT RAN OFF A OLD ENGINE AND WAS CLASSED AS OUTDATED THE TIME IT CAME OUT.
I hate OP. |

He's not talking about it being critically acclaimed.
It was revolutionary because it proved that a game CAN have both an excellent story and excellent gameplay without sacrificing either- and it also proved a game can and should be able to stand on singleplayer alone.

@Crossarms
Many games actually did this before Half Life. Ever heard of Shin Megami Tensei? or maybe Baldurs gate?

The first Half Life was insulted and shunned for it's story.
That or gaming journalists back then thought a poor explanation of a story was great.
Again, did you research Shin Megami Tensei? 1987 fool. |

Poor explanation of story =/= subtlety and leaving the player to gather the story on their own
So you're expecting all games to be blatant, obvious, hand-held and have in-yo-face exposition?
"Again, did you research Shin Megami Tensei? 1987 fool."
So now you're resorting to lies to prove something in an argument.
It was released in 1992.
This just goes to show the validity of your own argument.

You're referring to the first time the series was called "Shin Megami Tensei", I was talking about the complete series as Megami Tensei was released in 1987.
"Poor explanation of story =/= subtlety and leaving the player to gather the story on their own

No. If something is set to be a story heavy FPS, I expect it to tell me a story. The first half of the game is you just exploring, you don't get a single thing explained to you. I would like the game to explain why the hell I was teleported in the beginning. |

"You're referring to the first time the series was called "Shin Megami Tensei""
That's because you said Shin Megami Tensei and only that. You never said Megami Tensei, you only said Shin Megami Tensei.
"I was talking about the complete series as Megami Tensei was released in 1987."
No you weren't. You never said Megami Tensei, you only spoke of Shin Megami Tensei. Don't lie to us.
"No. If something is set to be a story heavy FPS, I expect it to tell me a story. The first half of the game is you just exploring, you don't get a single thing explained to you. I would like the game to explain why the hell I was teleported in the beginning."
It told you a story. You just had to figure it out. Not all games have to be hand-held.
"The first half of the game is you just exploring, you don't get a single thing explained to you."
It's there, you just have to notice and figure it out.
"I would like the game to explain why the hell I was teleported in the beginning."
The funny thing is this: It did explain that part. It's called a resonance cascade, it was explained by the scientists.
