TL;dr: Piracy can be good or bad, you can't control it no matter what, and it's not stealing and corporations don't necessarily lose money from it, it usually only gives them money.

Now, for the long one:

Piracy is that thing that corporations saw back in the days of Napster and said "That will make us lose money and everyone will steal!" Since then, corps think that if people have the option to torrent it, they will. But this isn't necessarily true. What companies don't get is that many people torrenting weren't going to buy that product anyways. Meaning that you aren't losing money. Of course, their will always be the people that torrent just to torrent, even if they've they're made out of gold and they can't be sold (try to guess what i'm referencing here, you get a digital cookie if you do.) But who's to say they still won't be cheap? They'll probably just copy music off of their friend and buying used copies of products. In some cases, in fact, piracy will in fact greater your product sales. Some people say that adobe uploads their software to torrent sites so that college student learning to use it who can't afford it can torrent it, learn it, and then buy the software when they're in the work world, when otherwise they wouldn't have learned it before and wouldn't have the need to buy it. Companies need to think more like this and see the bigger picture rather than thinking people will automatically steal.

And if corporations think they can go crying to the government about this and fix it, they can't. Maybe they'll be able to trace more torrents at first, but in a few months, some new technology will be able to get around them and be untraceable. So, companies need to learn to work with piracy and make better, non drm filled products so that people will WANT to buy the game.

That's my stance. I'd like to see what an anti-pirate has to say about this issue. Please post your feedback.

The amount of people who only pirate because they have no choice is incredibly small. 99% of the people who pirate on these forums have no excuse. "oh lol down with the corpoirations i aint given dem money."

Piracy is a problem simply because there's no scarcity.

You know supply and demand?

Well, in this case there's an infinite supply, and a moderate demand. This might seem good for them, but one of the things they have to watch out for is what would be traditionally called resale. Because there's an infinite supply, any person who buys a copy can sell it at the extremely competitive price of free.

This is peer to peer sharing, and piracy. It is illegal. Companies fear this because they have to compete with something they literally cannot compete with. However, people will always want to purchase from the guys who sold it first because they trust them more, so they're just being a bit dramatic when they imagine their business failing due to piracy.

You know, all of the preventive measures for piracy do work. Things like ads, I mean. Not digital rights management. You'll never be able to get rid of the pirates, but one thing they have been good at is keeping people who aren't pirates from becoming pirates, and they should actually focus more on that for success, but DRM is seriously working against that.

Honestly, some restrictive measurements placed on users might have them waiting for people to release a cracked version of a game, which is something that actually happens. (Google: "waiting for the cracked verison" game)

Piracy is sort of an unstoppable force, and it's part of an idea that's at the core of the internet ideologies. Sharing is essential on the internet. Close the book, and serve it roasted on a platter because that's it, it's done.

Trying to prevent it might be okay, but that won't work. As history has taught us, the only way to beat this is to actually try to do the impossible. Exhibit A would be iTunes. As a music distribution platform, it can compete with peer to peer sharing because of the ease of getting all your favourite songs at a cheap price in a matter of minutes, proving for eternity that, yes, people will pay for something they like.

"The amount of people who only pirate because they have no choice is incredibly small. 99% of the people who pirate on these forums have no excuse. "oh lol down with the corpoirations i aint given dem money.""

except people like opermini and penguinman can't even buy many games on steam because they don't except their money

also you clearly didn't read my post because children who torrent a game weren't going to buy it anyways

if i torrent a game i will attempt to support them when i have the money, but right now many kids on this forum literally have no money. so, mage, what's your argument for people who torrent games but plan on buying them in the future?

I'm not talking about them. I'm talking about people who CAN buy games but are to lazy to spend money on them.

also you clearly didn't read my post because children who torrent a game weren't going to buy it anyways

Then don't torrent the goddanm game! Good lord, if you want it buy it. If you don't then leave it alone. I don't see how this is an excuse.

...Get a job, use money from job to buy a legitmate copy. Don't fool yourself. If you get a game for free you aren't going to go out and buy another copy later.

fair enough

"Then don't torrent the goddanm game! Good lord, if you want it buy it. If you don't then leave it alone. I don't see how this is an excuse."

but if i wasn't going to buy it anyways

the devs don't lose money

therefore nothing is lost

I will only pirate a game if i cannot get it legally or it's simply too much of a hassle
things like getting from another country or spending a huge amount of money on it would fall under the hassle category

Oh, what this thread is still alive? Alrighthy then.

but if i wasn't going to buy it anyways

the devs don't lose money

therefore nothing is lost

Not going to dignify this with a response.

It's easy to say that on an online forum to make yourself look good. It's harder to follow up on it.

wow mage you are seriously dumb, you've become such a hipster dumbass tool that i'd say your even as bad or worse then ron

Yeah, throw around random unfounded insults. Because that doesn't make you look shallow at all.
