It pains me whenever you ask someone who their favorite artist is,they say someone mainstream who isnt even good like "lil wayne" or "2Chainz" or some other mainstream rap artists. Too many kids are listening to watered down hip hop these days which is the mainstream. Rap artists these days have no flow, lyrics, metaphors, good punchlines, things that actually make a rap song good. Its the same thing over and over again, money, cars, and females. Its garbage. Most rappers these days are just swagga heads, they dont care about real lyrics. Not to mention the dragged out r&b hooks get so annoying(this one is at you Drake!). I remember i asked a kid if he knew who Eazy-E was and he was like no. I was shocked... Kids these days know nothing about the golden age of hip hop which was back in the day. Hip hop is at an all time low and unfortunately kids think this brand of hip hop is the ish when its not. There are a few good mainstream artists like Kendrick Lamar and Eminem and J Cole but those are about the only good ones left. Im only 16 but im thankfull i know about the actually good artists like Nas,Mobb Deep,Big L,Gang Starr,Mos Def, and other greats. The Underground also has a few good artists like Hopsin and Madvillian.
Here's a list of old school and underground artists you should DEFINATELY check out if you like TRUE hip hop:
Nas(My favorite rapper and considered by some an all time great. ILLmatic was a GREAT album along with It was Written. Both are classics.)
Lupe Fiasco(Cant say enough about this guy. His wordplay and flow is crazy! His lyrics actually make you think twice and his flow hypnotizes you! My second favorite rapper next to Nas. He's made a bit of a comeback with SLR 2 and 3 but the old Lupe is the best. My personal favoirtes are Ghetto Story,Tilted,SLR, and The Instrumental)
Cassidy(A pure fire spitter! He kinda fell off a bit but he made a comeback with his response to K-dot. His bars are crazy good and his flow is sick. DEFINATELY check this guy out. Personal favorites are A.m to P.m and Picasso Baby.)
Big L(Unfortunately he is no longer with us but this guy has BARS. Punchline after punchline. It's a shame this guy doesnt get the props he deserves. One of the most underrated rappers EVER. His flow is sick.)
Gang Starr(A smooth lyricist teamed up with a sick DJ.What more can you ask for?)
Mobb Deep(Great rappers who hail from queensbridge. These guys are sick and represented what old school hip hop should be. My personal favorites are shook ones and hell on earth.)
Mos Def(An old school Drake. I will admit, drake is good but Mos Def might be better.)
Hopsin(Some of you might already know him because hes gained alot of popularity over the years. The kid can rap. His best songs are Ill mind of Hopsin 4, Sag my pants, and How ya like me now.)
Madvillian(A couple of good underground artists that dont really get the attention they deserve. Their album,Madvilliany changed the underground hip hop scene)
Big Daddy Kane(80s rapper. Good rapper)
Wu Tang Clan(Consists of several rap artists who each have solo careers. My personal favorites are Method Man,ODB,Raekwon, and RZA. Definately check these guys out along with the group. They are argueably one of the best hip hop groups ever.)
Fly Union(I only got a chance to hear one song but they sound pretty good. Check em out.)
Those are my notables but just try to find old school hip hop artists. Hip Hop isnt dead yet, there are still some good and upcoming rappers and old school still exists.

Too many good rappers are being slept on. |

hopsin isn't old school
and they're not being slept on, they've already had their turn in the limelight, if these guys remained dominant forever then there would be no new rap |

| Hopsin is just using mainstream rappers to get famous, he talks about some good stuff at times, but I can't get over that he is just dissing to make money |

Not many younger kids like my age know about them and they should. They need to get noticed again. Hopsin is getting more popular and is really new school's only hope. |

Hopsin is very popular actually
and most of the artists you listed were immensely popular or popular enough not to be considered 'underground' |

He wants to give kids a message. Just listen to his songs: Ill mind 5,6 and Nocturnal Rainbows. Hes trying to send a positive message to his viewers. |

I disagree. There are a loooooooooot of other rappers that aren't mainstream that are soo much better than Hopsin. |

| I get that he has some good messages, but I would enjoy him much more if he wasn't in the "game" for 10 or so years, and now he's getting famous because he realized dissing rappers will get him in the limelight |

and most of the artists you listed were immensely popular __________________________________________________________ Your exxagerating. Nas was popular at one point but not immensely popular. There are very few old school hip hop artists that are immensely popular. The only 2 i can think of are 2pac and Biggie and thats because they were murdered before they even got into their prime. |

They're from my home town. I got to meet Jerreau at the mall a while back. You probably heard of them from the 2K commercial? |

@As
They may have had their turn for a little while but alot of kids in my generation dont know about them and they should. My generation needs to wake up and start finding out about artists like Nas and Big L like i did. I'll never forget the first time i listened to Nas. The first song i ever listened from him was Hope off the Hip Hop is Dead album. I think i was around 12. |

| No, Nas is immensely popular. Illmatic is a highly acclaimed album and can be the best Hip Hop/Rap album just based on public perception, commercial success and it's critical acclaim. |
