| I have a budget to around $1100, but I can go $100 extra if needed. I'm not experienced in this field and need some help looking for an update. I have no current preferences. Ideas? |

"gaming" laptops have a huge price mark-up, poor battery life, weights as much as an semi-truck, is huge compared to other laptops, has a good chance to have termal issues, and the specs suck for what you pay for.
want to get rid of it? too bad it has terrible resale. |

| I'd just assume get a regular PC before you do that. I'm gonna get a Lenovo Laptop for roughly $450. |

| No, I don't want a regular PC. I said laptop for a reason. Weight isn't an issue. It just needs to be something I can take with me to university, able to do work, but also gaming on the side for when it's summer or I decide to do a gap year. If not gaming, just powerful laptops in general? |

my brother bought a Lenovo Y500 Ideapad for like $800 and it is good for gaming.
He got it on-sale, dunno how much it is now. |

I was going to say just get a desktop, but you have a legitimate reason to get a laptop instead. I'd recommend looking at a SAGER custom laptop. In your price range you should be able to get quite a killer notebook. Post your customization here after doing it. |

I recommend a Sony Vaio Gaming Laptop.
It's what I have.
But if you do, make sure the video card isn't Intel.
I also heard that CyberPower laptops are good. |

| If you live in America (I'm assuming you do) then have a look at origin PC, maingear and cyber power. They generally offer decent specs and give you great customisation options as well, so you can choose what you do and don't want. |

@Sama, what if I don't? Are those still good recommendations or do I have to look at something else?
@cupcake, lol. |

| I have an SNES already and looking for something with slightly better graphics, if possible, and a lot more powerful. I also found that it doesn't have microsoft office, which I need for university. As well as that, it's very hard to take it around. |

EMULATOR.
But seriously, get one within a $500 dollar range, that has the best specs you can get for $500. Try to refrain from the HP Pre-Builts. Then, with the $600 dollars you have leftover, save it for the Winter Sale (Steam), and upgrade the parts individually if it can be upgraded higher. |

Well, I'm looking for an upgrade not a downgrade. It also doesn't have a keyboard, instead a controller. Sort of not the kind of thing I'm looking for.
I've had an alienware 14 suggested elsewhere. I've heard that alienware are good for gaming, but are overpriced. Is it still worth it, though? Thoughts on that one? |

@Bino Like I said, get a $500 dollar one that is NOT a HP Pre-Built. And then, upgrade the parts alone if they can be upgraded higher. |

@Rose, NO
I'm not very quick at responding because I am researching elsewhere and forget to refresh. |

@roseart You really don't seem to understand that these are laptops.
@binomial I really don't care where you live, I live in the UK so I'm not about to bump into you in the street if you are in a country using dollars. I'm just trying to be to suggest sites that you could find a decent laptop on, knowing the country you live in helps us suggest sites you could try. Nothing more. |

@Sama I do understand that this is a laptop. The Alienwares melt, and HP Pre-Built laptops are bad in my experience. $500 dollar laptops are better. |

@rose
Laptops generally are not upgradeable to the extent you are suggesting. RAM and HDD perhaps but the CPU and GPU in a $500 laptop are certainly not replaceable and you will not find good ones in a $500 laptop anyway. |
