Most of us have designed some form of Windows/Mac/Linux Application, and we've all tried to "pretty it up." My question is, what do you as an Application Developer consider a good aesthetic for UI design? Do you like to keep it simple (Metro or Android-like)? Do you like the controls spaced apart (or the opposite, cramped together)? I honestly don't know how to describe my design methods, so I'll just provide a screenshot. prntscr/1lpwxt
So basically what I'm asking is, what makes an application "pretty" in your mind?

Bump. I'm seriously curious as to others' preferences on UI design. |

| Get out, krauqpu. If you're not going to put forth intelligent, useful, and relevant discussion, don't post anymore. |

| Would metro be considered sleek? Am I the only one that likes windows 8 design? |

| I love the design, but it just isn't incredibly efficient as far as non-touchscreen devices goes. As for aesthetics, Windows 8+ is beautiful. |

I try to dumb-down my applications as much as possible because 99% of the users are usually 7 year olds looking to hack club penguin through SQL injection (and it spits a big NO when they try to do it).
I also try to make the UI as sleek as possible. It's usually all white on black or the opposite. |

| That is, if it's not entirely console-based. |

"Would metro be considered sleek? Am I the only one that likes windows 8 design?" That screen'd application is the only one I've made that doesn't use Metro. Even my IRC bot uses Metro. |

Oysi; this is a re-write of an old application I wrote over two years ago when I was a skid. I'm doing it for nostalgic purposes, not to gain fame or attention in any way. Old version: bitly/14R0ePS Please try not to scream in horror too much. |

Minimalism is good for UI because it removes unnecessary information, and only presents exactly what needs to be seen.
However, I think that some 45 degree angles would be good for the shapes of necessary elements. Use them to "round" off some corners. (In the same way a stop sign is round, you know?)
The Unwise Wizard of Scripters has spoken. |

Two years ago the Minecraft Client was nothing but a login system with the homepage right above it. You couldn't allocate memory, you couldn't (and still can't) load your choice of mods on startup... you just couldn't to a lot of things with the client. Hell, you still can't. Anyways, this thread isn't about my re-write of an old application; it's about design aesthetics. Stay on topic. |

| While I agree for the most part, awsum, that 45 degree thing looks quite ugly on certain controls o.o |

Minimalism is always the best way to go. Try to keep everything flat and have a simple, intuitive user interface instead.

Well to me the Metro interface (windows phone text-based) is pretty cool, but then again, overwhelming with all that text.
Google's new card interface is also sleek, but could still be better off integrating design guidelines from their old HOLO design...

| I do like the Windows 8 theme for what it is, but it seems innefficient for non-touchscreen monitors (excluding the XBox as that has kinect) |
