Alright, first off - I'm not sure if this is the right forum spot for this topic, but since the other spots didn't seem to fit well, I decided to just make the thread here. Let me know if this isn't the right place and where it should belong.
Yeah, I'm making this thread to show/teach you how to actually role-play, as in improving it or just learning.. stuff. Yep. This is serious role-play, by the way, and not those 'MAKE A FAMILY GET A PET GET A JOB YOU NOLIFER' role-plays.
Let's start with this: |STARTING A ROLE-PLAY| To start a role-play, you're gonna need a setting and a story! For example, a post-apocalyptic world caused by a deadly virus (totally not referencing anything) or something like that.
Then, quite obviously, you're gonna need a character. Making one is quite easy but it'll become difficult when managing it. You'll get what I mean once your character has companions or partners. To make a character, just give 'em a simple or unique name, or nickname. Be sure that the name is original - just naming them Ezio would be ... y'know. They'll also need clothing - this one is actually very important. You don't want your character to wear a Nyan Cat costume on a snowy island - unless you want them to be a lunatic. Just be original and keep the setting real! Now to set a backstory for your character. This one can be difficult sometimes but here's a cliché example:
'John Doe was born in 1989, and is an orphan. Nothing special happened in his early life until he met an old man who went by the name Locke - the old man was very wise and John always looked up to him. During the great war, Locke was seriously injured but was saved by a retired surgeon. Both Locke and John were grateful to him but John discovered that the surgeon had a dark secret - the surgeon blackmailed John. Locke was killed by the surgeon. John left Alabama to find Locke's killer.'
... Yeah, too cliché but there's your example. Backstories are actually optional and you can make them more compact if you'd like. Depending on your character's personality - something that I'll cover next - they may refrain from telling their own backstories to other people, including close friends. Who knows if they can't handle it?
Alright! Personality! Giving your character their own personalities may not be easy for some people. Here's a tip: Look at your character and type out what you see. Scramble them around (not literally) and figure out what they can be like. It'll work, trust me. You can also copy your real self's personality and paste them over to your character, if you'd like to do it.
Now it's time for everybody's favorite part - special abilities!-- No. I, personally, dislike fantasy role-plays because of the too-simple things that the characters can do (but I'd admit that shooting ice spikes is cool), so I'm not gonna touch this one.
|TALKING AND EMOTING| This is the thing that I want to talk about the most. Some people are too lazy to get detailed with these kind of things.
Talking in RP is extremely easy to do! Like this:
Hello.
Or you can do it with style:
" ... Hello. "
You can also combine your speech with your character's personalities. If your character's extremely shy, you can do it like this:
" .. H-h-.. hello.. " (Heyhey, quick tip: If your character stutters a lot, don't put too much hyphens in your speech. It can make it look weird.)
Now for my favorite thing - I'd call this emoting but some people would call it 'performing an action'. Quite inaccurate, honestly, but you can call 'em either of those. You can do this in either first-person or third-person, and to avoid confusion you should put something like brackets in the beginning and the end of the emote:
First-Person & Present Tense: [I tap at my shotgun with my pointer finger and I slowly pull it over to myself. I would grab the stock of the weapon using my free hand, slowly setting my finger over the trigger.]
Third-Person & Past Tense: [He unzipped his backpack and reached for his cap. He pulled the said cap out and placed it over his head uncomfortably, patting it lightly.]
Grammar is very important while role-playing, but be patient or you'll ruin a whole sentence while typing.
|RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS| ROBLOX does not approve of online dating (OD) but romantic relationships between characters in an RP is pretty much allowed. Just don't do anything too unacceptable (***ual intercourse? You earn a surprise gift ban to Davy Jones' locker) around.
I usually get friends by striking a conversation with them (randomly, too - that's Zan for you) and helping them out once they state their problems. Sometimes, /they/ ask me a question and bam, Zan gets a companion. Also, stick with your friends a lot - unless they don't want you to, but being stubborn may add up something to your character's personality. Another easy way to get friends is by showing them that you're different than others. Or, just do what your character can do.
|FIN| That's all for now, may change later. |

I honestly thought it was okay for a how to, but for me roeplaying shouldn't be set in stone. It should be fun and spontaneous.

Yeah, I know - this is actually more of a 'improve your RP style' thing than a how-to, but y'know. I was also trying to make this quickly, since I'm at my gramps' and the wifi here could blow up in any minute. But yeah, I agree that it should be fun and spontaneous and I always consider role-playing as something interactive (everything that you do can affect the world around you, which is true).
Apologies if any of that didn't make any sense, English isn't my native language. :L

In a way, I was.

| An old hobo stumbles into the room, pulls out a machete and cleaves off your head, taking your head and slamming it into his unnaturally white and long beard, soon your head is gone, devoured by the beard. |
