I mean, most review these days knock off at least a point to the total score whenever they bring up the point of repetitiveness in games, just thinking back now, I ask the question myself
"When did it start becoming such?"
I mean, back when I was younger, I would tow away all conception and care for time whenever I play in the arcades, and spend all day in there until my parents would come for me and when would all leave the mall it resided in. Back in those days Light gun shooters were fun, beat 'em ups were great, and all of us spent a great deal of hours playing the games until we run out of money on hand. Yet no one really cared that you're essentially doing the same thing the whole time on two genres, hey, it was even really fun.
Did we get to the point where gameplay concepts/mechanics in itself can't hold a player's attention anymore? Where things have simply become in a sense(if it's even possible), shallower than before? Or is it that the general populace over the years, slightly missed the mark their truly meant to look at on their games?
I'm not sure, really, because even during these days, I still have the same amount of fun playing the old games I played when I was still younger. I guess I'm still stuck in my old ways, I guess. lol. |

i suppose it's because games are 50-60 dollars now and if you pay 50-60 dollars for something that you've already played then it's a rip-off it's how I felt after super mario galaxy 2

I wouldn't care if a repetitive game was 5 - 10 dollars. But if you pay 50-60 dollars for something that you've already played then it's a rip-off it's how I felt after super mario galaxy 2 x2
i refuse too |

See, that's the thing, you probably paid a lot more on arcades, you know?
It's just that- when exactly did this mindset erupted? |

When I was younger, I payed $2 dollars for every PC game I got. Even if it was an EA Roster Change, it was worth every single dime.

| Repetitiveness is boring, do i need to say more? I played duck hunt as a kid for hours but that was propably because i was just a child and easily amused. |

This thread is nothing but "oh hey looks guies i played old games so i hip"
But whatever, I'll respond. Repetitiveness became bad when video games became more then a throwaway children's toy. Back when game devs would keep pushing what they could do, making the same game over and over and over again didn't work any more because there were other devs off making games like Thief 2, Deus Ex and Morrowind. Games which took a new approach to gaming. Making Super generic fighter 27 didn't work anymore (Unless you're Nintendo.) |

@mage
...That's illogical, why would I flaunt my experiences as a sort of "hipness" when I'm just recalling nostalgia? I haven't found time to play much games recently.
Then the question must be asked- Is this a side-effect of the advancement of the gaming genre in itself- where the maturity of it fails to recognize the power of simplicity? I mean, not one of us shouldn't really deny that any of these games aren't fun- because they certainly are.
I guess we just put these 'deeper' games at a higher pedestal, huh. |

"games like Thief 2, Deus Ex and Morrowind. Games which took a new approach to gaming." Thief 2 looks very similar to the first game, just "better" (although the series as a whole was HUGELY innovative) Deus Ex's FPSRPG gameplay was inspired by system shock 2 i'm not necessarily attacking your argument, but those are bad examples |

| Repetivieness is around because after around 30 years of existence, video game ideas are all but abundant |

because now we expect more out of games. also, shouldn't sequels BE the same game with a different story, levels, etc, with a few truly knew things? |

@aqua Then why do people criticize Mario, CoD, Pokemon, etc to be "The same game over and over again" |

| Because out of all of the game franchises that are stubborn to spice it up, those are the most guilty. |

Thief 2 looks very similar to the first game, just "better" (although the series as a whole was HUGELY innovative)
It actually improved a lot when compared to the first game, but yes, I should have said "The Thief series" I just said 2 because most people consider that the best., And what most people think of when they think of Thief
Deus Ex's FPSRPG gameplay was inspired by system shock 2
Inspired by, that doesn't mean you can't improve it. and innovate (Which Deus Ex did)
...That's illogical, why would I flaunt my experiences as a sort of "hipness" when I'm just recalling nostalgia? I haven't found time to play much games recently.
You start a sentence with the words " I mean, back when I was younger. Also, that's "illogical?" I don't think that really works in the context of my last post. |

No it's because they want to play it safe
Bad Games don't make money
A safe game that you know will work still rakes in quite a big income
If you try something new and it bombs OH LOOK YOU JUST LOST A COUPLE MILLION WHOOPSIE LETS TRY THAT AGAIN OH WAIT YOU'RE OUT OF MONEY AND IN SERIOUS DEBT
WHOOOOOOOOPS
Game makers like to make games but if they mess up and don't make money they're pretty much screwed. So they will play it safe and make 10 or so million off of a game with a cult following
*cough* Call of Duty *cough*
Then there's games that try something new bomb and are called terrible. Oh and sequels that try something new may as well crucify them I MEAN A NEW SUBJECT THAT DOESN'T WORK OUT BECAUSE WE ASKED FOR IT
WOOOOOOWEEEEEEE BETTER YELL AT THEM FOR NOT KEEPING THE GAME THE SAME EVEN THOUGH WE HATE REPETITIVE GAMES.
So in short most companies want to make money and bad innovative games don't even though they're needed so we can learn from our mistakes and make a truly great game next time. But big companies don't want that so they play it safe and rake in a huge income.
In even shorter terms

Guilty as charged. However, I don't believe that has anything to do with my level of intelligence.
even trying to mis-characterize what the OP was trying to say.
Can you give an example from this thread? |
