i spent months training skills and fitting a naga, and as soon as i finish it, test declares war on goons, and goons camp 6vdt 23/7.
i'm in test. and that naga is now gone. rip 150,000,000 isk and months of my time. |

first off, from order of smallest to largest ships: frigate > cruiser > battlecruiser > battleship > capital ship > supercapital ship
the vindicator and naga are battleships
rifters are frigates
goons are one of the largest alliances in eve online, they control a giant chunk of space and lead a giant coalition of alliances. they originated from the somethingawful forums. they don't like fun.
test is one of the other largest alliances in eve online, they also control a giant chunk of space and used to lead their own giant coalition of alliances. they originated from reddit, and i'm part of test. we used to be best friends with goons but we got bored. we are in the process of slowly dying, and we are trying to make it as fun as possible.
6VDT-H was an old home system of test until they moved farther south to K-6K16, but until recently it was still the main system in the region. everything i owned was over there. recently the goons got in a giant fight over there (to the point where it made it to bbc news, that's how large it was), and took over the system. so, my stuff is gone. why do these star systems have such weird names? because they are null-security systems. low-sec and high-sec systems have actual names like jita, asakai, torrinos, amarr, etc as the most notable highsec names.
and cans are just storage containers floating in space. |

and to explain what i mean by each of those systems being notable:
high sec - 1.0 to 0.5 low sec - 0.4 to 0.1 null sec - 0 to -1.0
jita - 0.9 security, THE most populated system at all times. it's a gigantic trading hub for everything, and i mean EVERYTHING. there are thousands of people in the system at once, whether in the station, sitting just outside duelling people, or just passing through. the goons once decided to go to jita and kill everyone, but CONCORD (space police, hates you for attacking in highsec) blew them all up as they did it. they still made a huge profit from increasing the demand for new ships, and thus increasing the price.
asakai - 0.3 security, wouldn't be notable if the 2nd largest battle of all time didn't start over there. it started with a small factional warfare fight where the goons wanted to crash into the party and kill everyone, but a titan (largest ships in the game) accidentally warped in by itself instead of jumping in with the rest of its friends. from that, a gigantic battle with 2000+ people started, and it lasted about 8 hours. i was there for the last 6, and it was awesome.
torrinos - 0.5 security (still highsec), this system isn't unique for the people there or any landmarks or events in history. it's unique because the next system in the line is E C-P8R. yes, you jump from 0.5 to -0.5. this makes it an excellent gateway for cfc members (goon coalition) to reach friendly territory safely.
amarr - 1.0 security, another really large trading hub for those too far away from jita. |

I like complex games for the most part. But there is a fine line between "complex" and "spending 100 hours just learning the basics" |

you get used to the complexity. unlike dwarf fortress, the controls and ui aren't terrible.
i started playing eve when i was 11, and i fully understood what was happening.
what's so difficult to learn about it, anyway? you right click stuff, and then you choose your action. want to lock onto a target to shoot it? want to warp there? want to orbit it? want to approach it? want to keep a specific distance? all are available from right clicking.
and after a few months when you make a ton of isk, you can pay for your subscription in-game. it's really neat. |

Well, your basic "guide" of sorts did just take up 2 posts with like 5 paragraphs each. |

| i like playing games that are complex enough that the player actually has to RTFM, but i'm coming to realize that i don't like "wiki games" where you literally need to have a walkthrough in the background in order to know what you're doing (looking at you, dwarf fortress). |

"and after a few months when you make a ton of isk, you can pay for your subscription in-game. it's really neat." scamming other players is legal, right? if so i'm set |

i could have shortened it down to stuff like this:
goons are a large alliance run by the somethingawful forums.
test are a large alliance run by reddit.
6vdt-h was the former home of test, and where all my stuff was. it was recently taken over by goons.
jita is a large trading hub.
asakai had a gigantic battle happen there.
torrinos goes from high-security to null-security in one jump.
amarr is also a large trading hub. |

| it won't satisfy that spaceship captain itch, it's a different kind of game. sure, you do feel like you're piloting a spaceship, but not in the way of ordering crew around. |

i'd say eve online is best at just generally feeling like part of something bigger. kind of being a pawn in the grand scheme of things, or you work super hard for hours and hours and hours to be on top, and instead boss around the pawns. it's not so much about exploration and shooting as it is being part of a virtual society of 300,000 people who think different, speak different, live different, and react different.
it's the ultimate social simulator. |
