There are a couple things I've been thinking about that you guys might be able to provide some perspective on:
1) General opinion of studio plugins - awesome? terrible? dead feature?
2) Does anyone use them?
3) If not, why not?
4) If so, how are they shared/distributed?
5) Finally, if we had better web support for sharing and discovery, would your answers to numbers 1-3 change?
I'll check back in tomorrow.
Thanks, -os |

1) Ok but I don't have the time to find something that I might need for awhile
2) I don't use them
3) Check back at #1
5) 2 will which will therefore change 3 to 4 with a completely different view |

1) Useful, but needs more support from ROBLOX (e.g saving data) 2. Yes, people use them. 4] My website has a forum for them, as do a few others. 5- No, but you should still do that anyway. It was really a bad idea to release plugins without web support for them. |

I find plugins to be a handy utility for studio, especially for automating tasks and providing additional tools. What I use the most is CmdUtl since i can use shortcuts is overall more precise and versatile, Some node plugin i made to set up AI paths, a sound tester thing i've made( though I'd really love a better way to find sounds), and some terrain tools.
If there was an easy place to browse and find plugins that would be great. I'm sure I'd find something useful. c:

| Whatever happened to developer.roblox.com? I feel like ROBLOX just announced it and forgot about it, because we've heard absolutely ZERO news about it. |

Plugins are used within a IDE or game engine to simplify big task.
Apps are tools made to provide a virtual way to complete task.
"Plugins" ~= "Apps" |

@blocco You know not of what you speak
Extremely hard to find plugins, irritating to download & place in the right folder. That's the only reason I don't use them, I don't like going through the process. |

1) awesome, but a real pain to make them.
2) i just use the ones i made.
3) really useful for speeding up game development.
4) i don't download them.
okay, now for number 5.
sharing plugins on the offical ROBLOX site is never going to work, period. seriously, it will be a disaster and will just cause MAJOR annoyance to the plugin makers.
you have to take in ROBLOX's terrible and really hostile community. no one will bother making plugins after countless people just steal their plugin, claim it as theirs, and then start putting the plugin up on their profile. and if you are even thinking of starting a plugin SELLING system, no, absolutely not.
it's just like place stealing, heck, copied games are getting much more daily visits than the original. the same is going to happen with plugin sharing; copied plugins are going to be rampant. we don't need more annoying copiers on this site; we have more than enough rampant on the horrific front page.
no, some type of "prevent plugin copying" feature will not work either. there are people who can exploit this game with basically no effort whatsoever. it's just a matter of time if this plugin sharing system comes out that some jerk will post a tutorial on "HOW TO STEAL PLUGIN CODE LOL".
tl;dr: PLEASE DON'T make plugin sharing a feature, the community is too bad for it. this game is not meant for "open source" stuff anyway, it will just get more popular by other people. |

1) General opinion of studio plugins - awesome? terrible? dead feature? Good feature. Very useful for oft-repeated tasks in studio.
2) Does anyone use them? Yes. 3) If not, why not? N/A 4) If so, how are they shared/distributed? Pastebin, putting the contents in a model, zip files on random sites
5) Finally, if we had better web support for sharing and discovery, would your answers to numbers 1-3 change? Yes they would be much more useful. The key would be if you could view a plugin's source code right in the page so you could check for malicious plugins before you installed (install button would be right on site) |

Github is a nice way to distribute plugins.
Can we allow github? |

We make a Plugin that guides users on how to install and use Plugins! :D |

| How hard would it be to make a centralized plugin listing with a one-click install? How is that different than the current IDE for models, except for saving it to disk? |

1) General opinion of studio plugins - awesome? terrible? dead feature? Love them love them love them love them Can not live without them
2) Does anyone use them? ofc 3) If not, why not? -- 4) If so, how are they shared/distributed? Scripts with "Plugin" in the name.
5) Finally, if we had better web support for sharing and discovery, would your answers to numbers 1-3 change? no
My current plugins that I really use are: CmdUtl - Move parts because the normal move tools suck (move parts 0.333 studs :\) ControlSun - I can pretty much place the sun anywhere in the sky MakeAGui - I created this and it lets me insert customized GUIs. Very useful.
Better web support for sharing and discovery of Plugins would be amazing It would totally help building and improve quality of games.
And blocco installing and using plugins is incredibly easy... You can also link people that don't know to the roblox wiki page. |

The problem isn't with sharing plugins, it's just that there aren't really good plugins right now, other than Anaminus' plugins. Anaminus is pretty much the only one who made useful plugins (other than ROBLOX's terrain plugins, of course).
What I think would be a good idea is to re-implement the current studio tools of all kinds but using plugins. So far, all the terrain tools use the plugin API. There are many tools it would be simple to re-implement as plugins (I'm thinking about the anchoring tool, the lock tool, the part material tool, etc. ; those are all hardcoded in the studio but could be re-implemented easily). This would allow some improvements and would allow developers to find more things that could be improved with the plugin API, along with making it possible for users to edit these tools. Going further, it would be possible to re-implement most of the studio tools as plugins.
Also, you should try keeping the stamper tool and the stamper plugin in sync; right now, the stamper plugin is a bit outdated. |

hah, that will force them to make more useful methods/functions for plugins in-order to make all the old studio tools work like they did. |

| Oh, right, I think GitHub links should be allowed. After all, Twitter and YouTube links are allowed and surely there's a lot more inappropriate, irrelevant and off topic content on Twitter and YouTube than on GitHub. GitHub is great for ROBLOX projects as well as all other kinds of projects; there are many users using it, and there's an official ROBLOX organisation on GitHub for contributions from ROBLOX to open source projects, as well as another official (but not endorsed) organisation for users to contribute on projects. |

That's exactly the idea, and exactly what would improve the plugin API. If all the studio tools can be re-implemented as plugins, then that means many other things can be done using plugins. |
