I know more about the Holy Roman Empire and some about Byzantium, but it seems like a bunch of Turks banded and declared themselves defender of the faith and proceeded to steal Slavic culture.
Was Anatolia ever comparable to the Arab and Berber kingdoms of the day? |

| Are you asking if they were muslim, or if they were as good civilizations as the arabs or berbers? |

| They were cowards who brought forth a magnificent empire which spanned from the Mediterranean to North Africa. Nevertheless, they were cowards. |

Alright, maybe I phrased this wrong.
Were they everything they called themselves? The successor of the Roman Empire, defender of Islam, etc etc. |

| I think the Italians had black hair and darker skin tones because of the Ottomans. They did a good job. |

| They were successor to the Byzantines. Byzantium was the eastern part of Rome which lived on even after the fall of Rome. So Byzantine was kind off like Rome, but only the eastern half. So I guess you could say the successor of half of rome |

| Yes, but it was still considered part of Rome, until Rome fell. So the ottomans were successors to half of the roman empire |
