The Compagnie Générale Transatlantique was a French shipping company that, after WWI, dominated the Atlantic Ocean. It is here, in this largely forgotten company, that beautiful ocean liners were built. Now long gone, they were the symbol of a nation’s power. The bigger the ship, the more paying passengers you can carry. The faster the ship, the more newspaper headlines you can make. That was what every shipbuilder had to juggle with. But money was sometimes low, and it often took many years to build a ship. But the workers kept on building, the designers kept on designing the ships. No one gave up hope. And it is here, that we can look back at those golden years. In 1855, Emile and Isaac Péreire were known as men who could get the job done. Those days were the early years of passenger ships. They envisioned a company taking over the Atlantic passenger trade. Glory was in their grasp. They called their company Compagnie Générale Maritime. They also owned the Société Générale de Crédit Mobilier, which became their main shareholder. In 1860, they signed an agreement with the French Government. They agreed that, for twenty years, the line would build ships and carry mail across the Atlantic to specific ports in America, Canada, and Mexico. The government agreed, in return, to provide the line with an annual subsidy. In 1861, the company’s name was changed to Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. Several years later, in 1867, CGT switched from using paddle wheels to using propellers for its ships, mainly because propellers were more fuel-efficent. In 1868, the company almost collapsed when the economy crashed, devastating their finances. They had to file a petition for bankruptcy, and they were forced to retire from the company’s board. However, the company survived. In 1873, the line suffered its first serious accident when the Ville du Havre collided with the sailing ship Loch Earn. Traveling with 313 passengers and crew on board at the time of the collision, the ship sank in twelve minutes. Only 87 survived the disaster, including only one woman and no children. In 1886, the S.S. La Bourgogne sailed across the Atlantic in seven days, giving CGT first place in the New York postal service. In 1894, the company had its first passenger voyage with La Touraine which traveled from New York to Constantinople. Between 1897 and 1904, the European competition grew stronger, but the company suffered two losses. In 1897, the Ville de Saint-Nazaire had to be abandoned at sea, and in 1898, La Bourgogne sank with the loss of 549 people. Only 173 survived the disaster. On the bright side, in 1904, the company elected a new president when Jules Charles-Roux insisted on reorganizing the company. He emphasized the fact that speed was not as important as the quality of life on board. During the year 1907 to 1908, the immigration to the United States was at the highest it had ever been. Major shipping companies profited from people traveling in large numbers on their ships. However, France was not a big participant, as only 10% of all profits earned from immigrants were by the CGT. Also at that time, the only ships they had were not big and they were not fast. They became known for the luxury within their ships. In 1912, shortly after the Titanic disaster, the S.S. France came into service. During WWI, CGT transformed their fleet of ships into whatever was necessary. But when the war ended, 1/3 of the fleet was gone. They recovered by sending out one of their most dazzling creations, the Il De France, which entered service in 1927. After the stock market crash of 1929, the line lost much of its profit, as well as its passengers. The easiest thing to do was to sell the old ships and remove the unprofitable routes. The government provided a subsidy that enabled them to build the largest ship in the world, the Normandie. At 83,500 tons, she was the largest ship ever built, and most certainly the fastest. However, it was not a commercial success. During WWII, much of the fleet was, yet again, destroyed. One of the ships lost was the Normandie. In 1942, while being fitted out in New York, a fire broke out in one of the dining rooms. It quickly became out of hand. Fire crews put thousands of tons of water in her, which not only put out the fire, but caused her to list to port dramatically. Unfortunately, she capsized and was scrapped on the spot. The late 1940s and early 1950s saw the rise of new shipping lines, such as the Italian Line, in which the Andrea Doria entered service. In 1956, the Andrea Doria collided just a few miles outside of New York with the Swedish ship Stolkholm. Of the 2,600 people on board both ships, only 56 were killed. The Stolkholm surived, and is still in service today, but the Andrea Doria did not survive. Her wreck is still there today. In 1958, the first commercial airline flight was made, cutting the trip across the Atlantic Ocean from several days to only a few hours. Pretty soon, there was no use for the ocean liners anymore. Many were laid up, or sold to be scrapped. In 1961, the CGT launched a new flagship. The France was launched to bring back passengers on board. However, 66,000 tons of ship would prove to be useless. In 1975, all of the fleet’s ships were sold, and in 1977, the company merged to form the Compagnie Générale Maritime, which was the original name of the company. That was the end of the CGT. And just because it is not existent anymore does not mean it will be forgotten. The ships are still in the memories of the grandkids and the children of those who sailed on the fabulous ocean liners… all those years ago.
