I always had a fear of heights. When I was born, ever since I was a child, I wanted to jump out of the sky.

Yeah, seriously I wanted to jump out of the sky. I wanted to know what would happen to me, if I would jump off of something from about 25,000 feet.

But apparently at the age of 24, I fell from a mountain, which almost fractured my right leg.

But even though I had a fear of heights, I still wanted to jump off from the sky. Even though I was 27 at that time, I didn’t wanted to get rid of the dream I had dreamt since I was 5 years old.

So with a sad face, I went to my father, and asked him if he had any fears.

“Dad, do you have any fear?” I said.
“I used to.” He replied. He was busy reading his newspaper.
“Like, what kind of fear did you had?” I replied.
“I used have a fear of insects, mostly spiders.”

I was astonished.

“But then, how did you get rid of your fear?” I said with curiosity.

He then got interest in the conversation, and he put his paper aside.

“Dear son,” He said, “If you have a fear, say, like you have fears of spiders… Or heights… Or maybe even going a little too fast… But; Whenever you take a clear look of your fear, get to know it and know how it’s like and get the feel of it, it’s like you’ll get used to it… I got rid of my fear of spiders when I actually touched one… I was forced to, due to a Truth or Dare situation.”

He paused to drink his tea.

“See, fear is like a source of thrill. Of-course it can give you heart attacks and give you nightmares. But if you’re a daredevil kind of guy, like me and you, fear is nothing but a little thing for you. You can crush it. You can laugh at it. You can throw it away. Just think about it. You can do it. All you have to do is get up and close with your fear and then just let it all go.”

He resumed to reading his newspaper, and I immediately went to the nearest Sky Diving school.

Hours and hours of training, led me to eventually where I was a few years ago, on a plane, 15,000 feet above the air, with three other men.

The first guy jumped, then the other, and then the final one. And it was my turn. I calmed myself. I knew it’s just going to be a piece o’ cake, but for a guy who has fears of heights, you won’t understand how it feels like.

Few minutes passed, and I still didn’t jump. At last I thought about it. And asked the guy beside me to give a push. “PUSH ME!” I shouted.

And then I was in the air…

I was screaming for my life, At first I thought this is it, this is the end of me. But soon, 5 minutes later into the falling… I… I started to love it… I started to like it, and I started to enjoy it…

What a thrill! I screamed, screamed out of joy. I nearly cried.

And soon, minutes and minutes later… I landed on my feet, back on plain ground. It was amazing. Striking. Thrilling. Stirring.

And that my friends, was the story of me, few years ago. Now, at the present day, I’m a skydiving instructor, recorded about 14 hours of air time, about 115 jumps out of a plane. Who cares about fear? Just do it! That’s what I’ll recommend.

I really want to read the rest of this story, but I'm bothered by one simple thing: if the narrator is "afraid" of heights, then why does he want to freefall? Isn't a "fear" something you want to stay as far away as possible from?

Writer has mentioned that when he had his brief chat with his dad, he realized if he wanted to get over his fear, he had to experience it up close. I guess some people would want to run away from their fears, while others like OP said, "daredevils" will try to get close and personal with them.
