Here's a little explanation on building roller coasters I wrote up today.

Here is my process for building a roller coaster.

1. Come up with an idea for a ride. It could be a build off of another ride (like Cold Fusion) or something totally new like Copper Canyon or Black Swan. Usually each ride comes with an idea on how to theme it. Keep these ideas in mind, so draw them or jot them down.

2. Gather the tools you need to make the ride. This can be as simple as inserting a pre-made model of tools you use or as complex as scrounging free models for useful tools, or even creating your own tools. (see tools for more detailed information)

3. Start building your ride with the cart first. The cart is the most important asset as it (usually) clearly defines the ammount of work you are willing to put into your ride. A good cart can be simple or complex, depending on how much lag you are willing to account for. Aim for less than 70-100 bricks to keep lag down, while accounting for detail. The cart also defines what kind of track you will use (although sometimes it's the other way around) so it is important that the cart (or train as it may be) is in a close to final state when you start laying down track. (see building for more detailed information)

4. Get a regen working. This will allow you to rapidly test the ride without having to go through the process of positioning a cart multiple times in order to run a 30 second run-through.

5. Now that everything else is done (cart, regen, tools) you can begin building you ride. Start with the station and follow your idea. After the station is built, test your regen. Now, (assuming your ride starts with a chain lift) build the lift and test the ride. Did the lift work? Were there problems? If so, fix them and test it again. This is the number one error of most coaster builders, and that is they do not test their work. Roblox coasters are very difficult to change, so make sure you get it right before you waste effort on a non-functioning part of the ride.

6. Test, build, test, build, test. Again, people need to start doing this. Build a section of ride and test it. This is especially important on rides where the cart is not held tightly to the track (like Alpine Bobsled, Cold Fusion, and Copper Canyon.) Often times a section will be built too tall, so you need to make it shorter. This was a big problem in Cold Fusion, where I made an overbanked turn that people kept falling off of. I was able to work around it through constant building and testing (the aformentioned area was where the reverse-section is now with the house). It's also nice to take a little break from building once and a while.

7. Once you've completed the circuit, test your ride and feel free to publish it to test any online bugs (that's where the Overbanked turn was failing).

8. Start theming your ride. Usually you will already know what you have in mind and won't need the stuf you made in step 1. After you are done theming it, go ahead and call it a complete success. Beware though that bugs may crop up and you will probably need to fix them.

TOOLS:
I use a semi-simple toolset consisting of several useful tools. These tools are:
1. btools (copy, move, delete)
2. rotate
3. cframe
4. brick resize
5. axis rotate
6. teleport
Numbers 1 and 6 are pretty obvious. 5 is the tool of choice nowadays for rotating bricks as it leaves a nice, smooth look to the rotate. 2 seems a little odd because it is old, but it has many uses such as brick reversal (making a brick face backwards so you can edid the coaster in reverse) as well as creating scenery. 3 is mainly for scenery, but I sometimes use it to re-start the track bricks (I seem to be the only one who does this, don't worry). 4 is mostly used for scenery, but sometimes there are roblox glitches that don't allow you to place the next brick aligned correctly with the previous, so this is useful for getting them to line up.

TOOLS: Rotation tool:
Rotation tools these days are a combination of 3 different tools that used to exist seperately. They are Quick rotate, Normal rotate, and Precise rotate. Quick rotate will alter the rotation of a brick in 90-degree incraments, or 1/4th of a full revolution. Normal rotation will give you 1/32nd of a full revolution, and precise will give you 1/64th of a full revolution. In a modern rotate tool, they are bundled together and can be switched to any of these modes by pressing Q, N, or P with the tool open.
Another important feature of the rotate tool is the ability to change the direction of the rotation. Roller coasters do more than just go in clockwise circles! To change the direction of rotation of the rotate tool press Y, U, X, T, Z, or V. Y and U will rotate clockwise and counterclockwise respectively. X and T will rotate up and down respectively. Z and V will bank right and left respectively.

TOOLS: Track:
Nowadays, I use an autosmooth tool that I made to lay track. This isn't the case for everyone though, and the more avaliable "converter" comes in two different styles that are difficult to differentiate from.
style 1: a tool: click on each brick to turn them into rails
style 2: a script: run the script to turn each brick into rails

My favorite style is the script style, as it allows me to basically "batch convert" all of the rails, in other words, converting them all at the same time. My most popular coasters using the script style converters are Cold Fusion, Wing Rider, and Alpine Bobsled. Yes, Cold Fusion is a normal converter coaster!
The tool style converter is really easy to use, just click and its done. The script style is more timely to set up (4 more clicks) but saves a lot of work. To set up studio for the script style, make sure you have the explorer window by going View>Explorer and also the properties window by going View>Properties. Now you are ready to run script style converters! As long as you have an idea of what the script is doing, you will be able to use it efficiently and without errors. I won't teach you how to do that here though.

The last type of coaster track is hand-laid. This is the most formidable type of track laying because it takes up so much time. The trick to laying track by hand is to place the brick so that they are 90 degrees from where they should be, then use quick rotate to put them in place. That is how my first three coasters were made: Goldfinch, Black Vortex, and surprisingly, Rickshaw (it's probably the most complex track ever to be hand-laid on Roblox)

BUILDING:
This is the most fun (boring) part of making a coaster: translating your ideas from your head to into the roblox world. Please note that the following styles are used for specific portions of a ride, and a good ride will often combine a lot of these styles. Each style is centered around how to treat rotation in the Y-axis (heading).

Using a Simple building method with no tricks is easy: place one brick after another and rotate them. This can sometimes lead to messy transitions between sections of the ride that you have built as rotations don't line up though. I've done this for 3 rides on record (my first three: Goldfinch, Black Vortex, and Rickshaw (I also used a modified Simple/Fixed style for Copper Canyon)). Simple could also be considered "freeform"

Using a Fixed style takes a lot of practice, but follows this simple order of operations for rotation: Yaw, Pitch, Roll. In other terms: turn, slope, bank. For the fixed style to work you must always rotate the bricks when the part is level. This takes more time but also creates spectacular elements such as helixes (as seen on Caterwaul, Cold Fusion, Runaway Truck, Wing Rider, and Copper Canyon). The time portion is due to the requirement that from any pitch, you have to get the brick level before turning it, then rotating it back to the pitch that you want.

These two rotation styles are key to getting a smooth looking ride. For starters, you will want to use a simple style to get a few coasters under your belt as well as familiarizing yourself with the tools.

Also, the best way to learn how to use the tools is to experiment, so now that you know the basics, go out and create!

TL;DR coaster making is a difficult process and if you absolutely must read this because you didn't read the rest, you're probably not cut out for making roller coasters.

If you didn't have to resort to the TL;DR version, pat yourself on the back.

As in "restarting track bricks" do u mean recutting the brick in position with the Cframe tool and deleting the recent non-working track? If so, I also do that sometimes

@rocks:
1. you'd have to find out
2. as long as you have the reference bricks that you rotated the speed bricks off of, you'll be able to turn those into a converter coaster. If you deleted those, you have a lot of work to get them back.
3. depends on the work you want to put in. Runaway Truck took over 6 hours to make because of the supports.
4. velocity bricks, pretty much exactly the same ones as in #2
5. use balls. They're the exact same as cylinders except without the annoying + sign. Using a cylindermesh doesn't change this, in fact it's recommended that you use balls + cylindermesh.

@indy I'm talking about when the spline bricks get out of alignment (they won't turn perfectly level) I will CFrame a new one in at the end so that its right.

If you want to do it in Studip you could also just use CmdUtl, but it does make testing harder.
