[----------------------------------------------------------------------------]
-:Chapter One: Introduction -:Chapter Two: Helpful advice -:Chapter Three: Teaching Methods. -:Chapter Three: Conclusion.
[---------------------------] [Chapter One] [---------------------------]
Welcome to the guide on useful advice for training soldiers. In this guide you will learn some helpful tips and advice on how to become a better leader and instructor.
These are all things I’ve picked up through my years as a leader in many groups. You may have some different ideas, so feel free to post a reply with your thoughts.
[---------------------------] [Chapter Two] [---------------------------]
Here are a few helpful tips when you are training;
- Plan ahead: Know what you will be doing, and visit the place or test the maps before calling the training.
- Introduce yourself, so the trainees know who you are. Doesn’t have to be much, just a simple “Hello” and “Welcome!”.
- Give out the rules before you start, saying the rules as you are training will cause confusion.
- Make sure your rules can sum up a lot of information in a little sentence. Sometimes numbering your rules may confuse the trainees.
- If your training will be strict or easy, let them know before you start. Some may be confused when you pull them aside for something they may not know was incorrect.
- Give clear definitions of words some people won’t know, such as “Flamming” or “Profanity”.
- Do not get in the way of the trainees. It’s fine to join in, but don’t interfere with their learning process.
- Before activities, try giving some useful tips. This will allow them to learn something, to help them perform better at the activity.
- At the end of the training, most people may pick recommendations or promote people because they are a lower rank. Pick who you think deserves it, then check to see if they can receive the promotion or recommendation.
- “Asking for a training, is the same thing as asking for a promotion”. Most people attend trainings to get promoted. Holding a training with no recommendations or promotions doesn't hurt.
- Be organized, don’t let too many people use admin. And make sure you have planned out the training before you start. Unorganized trainings don’t make for a good lesson.
- Be mature and follow your own rules. Being immature isn't being a good role-model for your trainees.
- Don’t allow complaining. Trainees that complain about activities or how an action that perform is a bad influence to other trainees.
- Make sure grammar is used. Grammar is becoming scarce in the new world. Good grammar can insure that they keep a sharp mind.
- Get a mixture of different activities, just doing combat skills or obstacle based trainings can get boring. Mixing something different in will allow the trainees to have a break. Combat and obstacle based trainings only are still fine now and then.
- If you see someone struggling, help them out. This will motivate them to do the correct thing.
- Always use positive motivation.
- End the training with a positive saying. “Great job today!” or “Very nice, but next time..”
[---------------------------] [Chapter Three] [---------------------------]
In this chapter I’ll be talking about two different methods on how to teach your trainees.
- E.D.G.E. Method: The edge method is used to encourage positive attitude into the activity or action they are performing.
[E] Explain; Explain what you will be doing, giving visuals of the activity is very helpful. Explain how to do it, step by step.
[D] Demonstrate; Give a demonstration on how to do it, using help from those who know what they are doing is helpful. Make sure you point out anything you left out.
[G] Guide; Allow them to do the activity, help them through it but don’t get in their way. Always use positive reinforcement. “Great job!” or “You’re doing great, but...”.
[E] Enable; Encourage them that they are doing the correct thing. Still use positive reinforcement, and allow questions at the end.
- Disciplinary Driving.
This method is the complete opposite of the E.D.G.E. method. It can be summed up in a short paragraph.
In disciplinary driving, you always want to point out what they are doing wrong as soon as it happens. Don’t be harsh, but get to the point slowly. They already feel upset because they are being talked to, they may have some confusion. Tell them what they did, and have them correct it. “Learn from your mistakes” is a big key in disciplinary driving. Still use positive reinforcement, and stay out of their way. Still explain what to do, but let them learn as they go.
[---------------------------] [Chapter Four] [---------------------------]
Thank you for reading my guide for tips and advice for training soldiers. You may have different names, or methods you may use. I hope you found mine useful.
