Hi! I am Thetawave/Syst/Ence and I am here to make a huge megathread which no one will probably post in after the OP. This thread is dedicated towards the Post-Hardcore, Screamo, and Emo genres of music, reflecting all of the scenes of them in a historical sense, and also introducing those who may be into more commercialized hardcore music into deeper fields of this area.
(-(-(What are these genres and why should I care?)-)-) All of them have their own individual qualities and tropes but they're pretty much nearly all under the same bracket. Post-Hardcore is an offshoot of Hardcore-Punk that started in the 80s but has, in modern days, evolved into something entirely different. It's a bit hard to put it in the same scene as punk anymore... Early bands of the genre include Fugazi, Rites of Spring, Drive Like Jehu, and Saccharine Trust, and Modern favorites include At the Drive In, Fear Before the March of Flames, and Glassjaw.
Emo and Screamo are pretty self-explanatory by modern day standards, though the definition of Screamo, to most people, is a bit bastardized. Screamo began to be understood in the 90s with bands such as City of Caterpillar, Orchid, and pg.99. What most people define as Screamo doesn't really fit the definition, and as it's a really petty argument that doesn't equal up to much, having screams does not necessarily equal to Screamo. It's entirely just a form of 90s emo music.
There's also Midwest-Emo/Indie Emo, which is entirely different. I'm not too fond of it but it's generally really slow and inspired by 90s Indie. Umbrellaically, their lyrics tend to deal with honesty, personal issues, etc. So the music ends up sounding a lot more innocuous or softer. Key bands are American Football, Cap'n Jazz, Mineral, and Snowing.
A lot Emo/Screamo bands tend to use Post-Rock etiqeutte in their music (Circle Takes The Square, Envy, City of Caterpillar)
(-(-(General Band Listing)-)-) h t t p : / / p a s t e b i n . c o m / d A 3 8 u k j 5 I can edit this list at any time, so go ahead and tell me bands to put on there in the case i've forgot important ones.
(-(-(End Notes)-)-) To those of you who have read it all up to this point, thanks for reading. I hope you learned something at all from this post, and if you haven't, you're probably in the same plateau of knowledge I am. now go on, listen to music. |
