| - Of course everything went wrong. But, it would be interesting to know what tactical and strategical mistakes were made on the British side. |

Unless he was a high ranking staff officer then what he did in this matter means little to none in the overall break down.
I think a interesting thing to note is that the Japanese were riding down Malaysia so they had a type of blitzkrieg in a way. |

He was an officer and survived a banzai charge after being shot in the back by two Japanese soldiers.

| Commander, if memory serves correct your great-grandfather would have been in Iraq[or other parts of Arabia]. I was not aware the British would be sending soldiers from the African front all the way to the Royal Colonies in Singapore. |

| If this is all true then what do you know of the defense by the British in Malaysia. Then again my great grandfather was disturbed by his experience in the European Theater so yours may have never talked about it as well. |

| @Master ah but, you're wrong. When you out number your enemy 10 - 1 every soldier doesn't count but, the overall performance of the unit as a whole. The only case where every soldier counts is when you go to war with a chess like strategy - attrition warfare. Then indeed numbers matter. |

| Ah I see. Ye those bicycles were more or less a secret weapon because, you could carry more supplies and not get tired. |

| Lol, I feel so old. Everyone's great-grandparents fought in WW2, while I only have to look back to my grandfather to find a world war 2 vet. He was born in 1920. |

What went wrong in the Battle of Singapore is what went wrong in the Battle for Malaysia:
-The British outnumbered the Japanese, but still couldn't hold them back.
-Percival wasn't much of a tactical genius. He fought the Japanese, expecting conventional warfare.
-Percival squandered what little naval support he had during the early stages of the Japanese invasion.
-British troops were only prepared to hold back the Japanese at certain positions along the Malay Peninsula. Once these positions were breached, the Japanese were able to take huge swaths of land (including Kuala Lumpur) with little to no resistance.
-After Malaysia was lost, Percival was hopeful that he'd be able to hold Singapore with reinforcements. All he got was several Australian regiments.
-Most British troops were stationed in either the city or at the Northern edge of the island, waiting to hit the Japanese troops as they landed on shore. The Japanese just went through the practically undefended marshes and gained a foothold on the island.
Basically, everything that could have gone wrong went wrong. It wasn't all Percival's fault (although he was by no means a great general), but rather, British military strength in general. The British Empire was ready to re-fight WWI, but by no means was it prepared for the entirely new set of tactics used by the Axis. |

| Well if he's actually fighting (I know he goes and come from Syria, but I'm not getting a definite answer for whether he is actually fighting or not) it's for Hezbollah. |
