A friend (blahblah26) and I were talking recently about how the Top Grossing sort may backfire, with the front page being left only to low-quality games that sell out with tons of game passes and such, or to games that are already popular.
We talked about alternatives, and he came up with a sort by time spent ingame. The site would average the time each player spent in the game over the last, say, 24-hour period, and display the games in the descending order of those averages.
Not only does this idea sort out quality (people are unlikely to spend a lot of time on a place they don't like), it also isn't visit/popularity-dependent (since it averages the times, it doesn't matter how many people are there), thus giving ample opportunity for all types of places to be displayed.
The only problem I can see with it is place owners just staying in their own places for long periods, or having alts in there. But, then again, the idling service helps to prevent that. |

This is definitely one of the better suggestions I have come across lately.
There are, however, some things that could affect this idea. That would be very similar to the front page right now, since multiple people are spending long amounts of time on the most popular games currently. Also, games such as that obby's and tycoons would keep reappearing on that page, since most people generally spend more time on those than something like a roleplaying game.
But that's definitely an idea. I partially support you on this one. |

| I love the suggestion, and the thing about owners trying to use alts is roblox could work around this by retrieving the ip of a player and comparing it to the owners ip thus solving the problems of using alts. I mean a few peple could try a proxy server and different routers but hey. |

@Firebolt: Hmm, I guess you're right. Games that take longer to play will still be up there.
Maybe incorporate a measure of how many times each player visits a place? Work that into an algorithm. It's the same idea; players are unlikely to keep coming back to a low-quality place. |

| @MrBossMan, I see what you're saying there. Using an algorithm to count how many times a player has came to that place and compare it to how many times ample amounts of other users have came to the game to determine if the place is popular or not. |

I still don't think it should measure popularity in any way. There are a bunch of places on the front page that are just Kardashians--they're popular because they're popular because they're popular because nothing. The front page shouldn't show places that are already popular--it should show pages that *should be* popular.
Part of why I'm saying all this is that Ultimate Paintball hasn't been front page in ages. |

@mrbossman
Using algorithms based on returning visits from users would probably bring up a lot of the most played roblox games..ever. If they were going to create an algorithm of some sort, I would base it more off the content and not user statistics collected from the game. |

| That or roblox could just generate some games on the front page based of the games the user has played recently for suggestions not according to popularity. |

| @Firebolt: Of course, there would be a time limit. Most returned visits in the past week, perhaps. |

Also the problem with the person going on to his/her alt and staying on his/her game for a long time can be solved with the User's IP.
Ether the internet connection or the Computer IP, or both :P |
