If I had the money for it. I realize that building your PC is cheaper, but it's still quite a bit of money that I don't have.

You could get a PC for a rather cheap price that could play games.
$300-$500 would get you an entry level PC. |

I'll get a Wii U, then I'll shift my interests toward PC gaming.

| Also, despite being able to get a gaming PC, I would also recommend saving until you got enough for a medium-end build, at least. |

I actually have a fairly competent PC, but it's not ideal and my parents will not let me upgrade it at all. I asked if I could get a better graphics card, but they rejected that. So my only real hope is to get one of my own that works well.

A question: would I be better off using a Linux-based OS like Ubuntu?

For an extremely tight budget PC, most likely.
It would depend on what games you'd play though.
A list of Linux supporting games that are on Steam can be found here:

| They refuse to let you make it better because they paid for it? Is that even a reason? |

I'm fairly certain they think I'll break it.

"Couldn't I just use WINE?"
A lot of games don't work well with WINE
+ Sometimes using WINE can get you banned if they find out |

The games I would be running would be Roblox, Minecraft, Portal1&2, and Half-Life.

Pretty sure only TF2 has a Linux release.
The others are probably getting ported, however. |
