"Drone At Its Rawest, Purest Form)))"
I love drone. I love pure repetition at it's finest. Anything that can help me sleep at night is amazing to me. I've quickly grown some kind of fascination for ambient and drone music. So why not decide to look at a release from everyone's favorite drone metal band, Sunn O)))?
Sunn is known for their amazing live performances (I have yet to see them and probably never will))). Now listening to a recording is obviously completely different from experiencing them live, but it doesn't make "The Grimmrobes Live" bad at all. Here we have 7 passages, most flowing perfectly into the other. They range from as low as four minutes, up to twenty-four minutes. This is a lot like "The Grimmrobe Demos" (the kind of stuff you'll get if you see them live obviously))), so if you're not the kind of person who likes Sunn at their rawest, this probably won't be for you. It's almost 100 minutes long.
Minimalist music is not the easiest music to review. You have to have a true ear to really capture why you like or don't like it. I'm still not quite there. I have quite a ways to go. Since my days as a younger child, the first time I listened to Burzum ("Hvis Lyset Tar Oss"), up until now. Still fairly young, a lot longer to go. My journey with minimalist music has a long way to go. Sunn has always helped that. Since when I first listened to "Flight of the Behemoth," up until now, I can also thank my brother for helping this music grow on me. It fascinates me. "The Grimmrobes Live" is one of the best examples of this. It doesn't rank high on my favorite albums of all time, but it's definitely (one of))) my favorite Sunn album(s))). One of my favorite drone albums, and an amazing experience in general. That's what makes Sunn (and similar bands))) unique. It's an experience. Knowing prog fanboys for the longest time, they always complained how it was boring, lifeless, repetitive, etc. It's true, yes. But that's the point, and they missed that. If you feel like you'll NEVER be able to see Sunn live, listen to this. It's about as close as you'll get. This is Sunn at their purest, and most raw form. An excellent beginning into the journey of drone. The duo have influenced me greatly, and I have somewhat of a special bond with this band and their music. Though most people's introduction to drone metal is typically "Earth 2," this is also a very noteworthy album.
Back to the album, it's a very dreary album. It slowly changes, and if you have the patience to sit through the entire thing (like I am as of writing this review), it's well worth it. I love part five, mainly since it's the longest. If you're a fan of "The Grimmrobe Demos," this will greatly please you. It's very grim(m))) and haunting. It's best you shelter yourself off in a room, with it as dark as possible, and this album on full blast. That's how you experience Sunn. If you're not fond of low frequencies blasting at your ears for extended periods of time, you may want to skip this. If you have headphones that would be even better.
If you're the kind of nerd who loves blasting "Earth 2," awaiting the new Boris or Sunn release, check this out if you haven't. There haven't been any reviews of this album on this site, and that's why I mainly chose to review this. It's a fantastic album, and you all should listen to it.)))
